Foundation · Unit 0

Using the simulator

In short

The parts panel and the canvas, the tools, wires and cables, the lids and fronts that hide terminals, running a circuit, the meter, the Manual and the helpers. Nothing here is marked.

In this unit

  1. The parts list and the canvas

Put a part on the canvas, move it, turn its terminals, remove it and bring it back.

How it opensThis is UNIT 0. It shows you how to use the simulator, one tool at a time. Nothing in unit 0 is marked, so take your time.
  2. Wires: draw, colour, bend, erase

Draw a wire in the right colour, remove it and draw it again.

  3. Cables

Take a cable, connect its cores, bend it, take a core off and put it back, hide the cables.

  4. Under the lid: boxes and fronts

Open the pump's terminal box and take a programmer's front off, two ways each, and put them back.

  5. Run and stop

Run a circuit, switch the supply on and off, watch the boiler light and stop, and stop the simulation. (A short cut to show the simulator: not how a boiler is wired.)

  6. The meter

Get the multimeter out, take a voltage reading with the circuit in use, and a continuity reading with it off. (On the same short cut: not how a boiler is wired.)

  7. The Manual, History and the examples

Open a part's Manual, the history of your changes, the text size and the Conditions card, hide wires by colour, and load an example circuit.

Using the simulator in the DrawWarm simulator

You will learn to

  • Put a part on the canvas, move it, turn its terminals, remove it and undo
  • Draw a wire in the right colour, bend it and erase it
  • Take a cable, connect its cores, bend it, take a core off and hide the cables
  • Open a pump's terminal box and take a programmer's front off, and put them back
  • Run a circuit, switch it on and stop it
  • Get the multimeter out and take a voltage and a continuity reading
  • Open a part's Manual, the history, the Conditions card and an example circuit; hide wires by colour

Units based on makers’ products

The units in these lessons are the simulator’s own, simplified for teaching. Each is based on a maker’s product and may differ from it: on site, read the unit’s own instructions.
