Fault Diagnosis
In short
Real fault-finding challenges! Systems have hidden faults - use your multimeter and diagnostic skills to find and fix them. You will diagnose no-power faults, find broken connections, identify component failures, trace faults systematically, replace faulty components.
Comes after S-Plan Wiring or Y-Plan Wiring.
The 5 challenges
- 01
No Power to System
The customer reports that the heating system has no power. The programmer display is blank and nothing works.
Easy · 5 min
Call-out: 'Nothing works - no heating, no hot water, and the programmer display is blank.' The fused spur is on and its neon is lit. - 02
Heating Not Working
The customer reports that hot water works fine, but the central heating won't come on despite being called for.
Medium · 10 min
Call-out: 'Hot water is fine but the radiators never get warm. The programmer says heating is ON and I have turned the room stat right up.' - 03
Hot Water Not Working
The heating works fine but the hot water cylinder isn't being heated. The customer says it's been getting progressively colder.
Medium · 10 min
Call-out: 'The heating works but we have had no hot water since another firm fitted a new zone valve last week.' - 04
Valve Stuck
The customer hears the heating system trying to fire but nothing heats up. You can hear the zone valve motor running.
Hard · 15 min

The customer says the heating works 'sometimes'. It seems random - some days it works, other days it doesn't.
Expert · 20 min
Call-out: 'The boiler keeps cutting out and coming back on by itself, every few seconds, even though the heating is calling all the time.'
