More zones

In short

Heating systems with more than one heating zone: a second zone added to a working S-Plan (its stat on block 4, its call on block 9, its orange on block 10), the hot water moved onto its own timeswitch, two zones on a combi (the heating factory link out, block 10 to LR (HTG)), a second wiring centre for a bigger job, linked to the first, and the practical: the S-Plan Plus wired from memory. It earns the credential S-Plan Plus (simulator). This unit is written and being checked; it opens to learners when it is ready.

In this unit

  1. A third zone

A working S-Plan gains a second heating zone, its third zone in all: a second room thermostat fed from block 4 like the first, its call on block 9, and a second 2-port valve driven from block 9, its orange joining block 10. Zone 2 is proved on its own: the valve, the boiler, its pump and the radiator, with the meter on blocks 9 and 10.

How it opensThis S-PLAN works. It has two ZONES, the radiators and the hot water cylinder. Each has its own 2-port valve, so it heats on its own.
  2. Hot water on its own timer

The hot water comes off the programmer and goes onto a Single Channel timeswitch: the programmer's HOT WATER wire taken off with Erase's Wires only, the timeswitch fed from blocks 1 to 3, and its ON wired to block 6. Proved on the timeswitch alone, with the programmer's hot water screw left spare.

  3. Zones on a combi

A DrawWarm Combi, newly fitted, with two heating zones already on the wiring centre: the spur to 230 V IN, 230 V OUT to blocks 1 to 3, the HEATING factory link taken out, block 10 to LR (HTG), and the hot water link left in. Each zone alone fires it; the meter reads block 10.

  4. Running out of blocks

A bigger job is coming - a fourth zone and a frost stat - and the wiring centre has three free blocks. A second Wiring Centre takes the three oranges, through a link from block 10 and two links of its own; this course numbers its blocks on from the first. Proved dead on the permanent live, the wires moved, the links tested for continuity, and the truth table unchanged.

  5. The practical: S-Plan Plus from memory

The S-Plan Plus parts fitted and no wires: the whole system wired from memory - the supply, the boiler's 230 V OUT to the centre, the pump on PUMP OUT, the programmer, two room stats, the cylinder stat, three valves, and the oranges to block 10 and the boiler's SL. Every step names the job, never the block, and every state is proved. No hints. Recorded.

More zones in the DrawWarm simulator

In the simulator, you practise how to

  • Add a heating zone to an S-Plan: the stat fed from the heating demand, its call on a block of its own, the valve's orange joining the others
  • Put the hot water on a timeswitch of its own and leave the programmer's channel spare
  • Wire two heating zones to a combi: the heating factory link out, the oranges to LR (HTG), the hot water link left in
  • Add a second wiring centre for a bigger job, number its blocks on from the first (this course's habit) and link the oranges across
  • Prove every zone alone and all together, with the meter on the call and the oranges' blocks
  • Wire a three-zone S-Plan from memory and prove every state

Checks and credit

  • A timed check at the end of the unit, its questions drawn at random. The score goes on your record.
  • A practical with no hints, every step recorded.
  • The unit earns the credential S-Plan Plus (simulator).

Certificates of completion and credentials are DrawWarm’s own. They record practice and tests in the simulator. They are not a formal (regulated) qualification, and they do not show that anyone is competent to work on a heating system.
